Job Description

The Engineering and Applied Physics department at Vertex, San Diego, is looking to add a top-notch Mechanical Engineer with concentration in Materials, or a Materials Scientist with mechanical design experience to our small, elite team of engineers and physicists. From advanced robotics and automation to microfluidics and cutting-edge microscopy, our team develops a wide array of performance focused technological solutions for the toughest challenges in drug discovery. This unique in-house team collaborates directly with Vertex scientists where commercial options don't exist; creating innovative solutions that enable groundbreaking science. Our in-house instrumentation team can design and build instruments that our scientists need to do innovative work, but can't buy commercially.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Take innovative approach using knowledge of materials, coatings and surface chemistry to apply advanced materials in support of department projects
  • Provide mechanical design of complex precision electro-mechanical and opto-mechanical systems
  • Execute and support projects from inception, through design, review, build and deployment
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to define project requirements and timelines, and communicate status in a high paced environment
  • Present designs for review to department, cross-functional, and senior management audiences
  • Deliver innovative, effective solutions to challenging engineering problems


Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science with 4+ years experience or Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering with a Materials concentration, or Materials Science, Materials Engineering
  • Mechanical design experience in precision electro-mechanical or opto-mechanical systems
  • Experience selecting, testing and deploying advanced materials and/or coatings for difficult mechanical, electrical, biological, thermal and/or corrosive applications
  • Proficient with CAD in a professional environment and has a demonstrated ability to think, design, and communicate in 3D
  • Finite Element Analysis experience with working knowledge of thermal, flow and/or electric field simulation is a plus
  • Design experience with a variety of manufacturing techniques such as CNC, 3D printing, sheet metal fab, injection molding
  • a compulsive problem solver with examples of delivering innovative, effective solutions to challenging problems
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools; basic mill/lathe machine tool skills or a desire to learn
